Default Just joined...

Hi everyone. I have just joined and wanted to say hello.

I grew orchids when I was a teenager - mostly warm growing types, mostly phals. I moved to the UK 7 years ago and took up orchid growing again, but because of the climate here, chose cool growing types. I fell in love with Masdevallias! My husband and I were then sent to India for 2 years and I lost all of the plants in my collection. We got back to the UK January 2006, and I started rebuilding.

I am currently interested in a cool terrarium for the Mas. and some others. I also have Brassias, Oncidium, and have just added Restrepia.

Any advice, tips, suggestions, experiences welcome!

Cheers,
Shakkai

Hi Shakkai
Welcome to the best orchid site...ever!

Sounds like you're on your way to re-building your collection We'd love to see some pictures.
Lots of people here grow under the same conditions as you describe and many of them have vivs or terrariums

You're gonna love it here!

Welcome Shakkai. There are lots of Masdies that will grow in a terrarium especially if you can keep it cool! Most folks have a problem with heat, but if your temps are staedily in the cool to intermediate range, then go for it! If you check the back-threads in the "Terrarium Gardening" section of this board, you'll see some pretty interesting discussions. Some of these have to do with species that do well in terrariums. Good luck and welcome aboard.

Thanks for all of the welcomes! Here is a photo of one of mine that is in flower now - first flowers on a young plant bought last year. O. 'Octopussy'

I will be looking to see what miniatures I can add in a cool terrarium. Obviously there will be the Masdies, but would like some others to add variety, I think.

Thanks again!
Shakkai

Ah ... Encyclia cochleata, the cockleshell. Looks great for a first-bloomer ... before too long, it will reward you with many flowers

I'm just so pleased that it actually flowered at all! Only 4 flowers total - 2 still to open. But it flowered, and that brings me so much joy... Seeing a young plants first flowers... It is easy to see why this is so addictive.

Welcome Shakkai. Hope you enjoy the forum, there are so many knowledgable people here. Lovely encyclia, and so many flowers, I didn't know they had so many. See, I learned something!

Yessss, another Masdie lover. I currently grow 4 species, and I may have lost one. Not too sure. You see, I mounted them to a background in my terrarium, and made divisions of all of them. As a result I lost track of who is who.
