Hello from Massachusetts! - Orchid Board

Hello everyone - I'm pretty much brand new to the board so I figured I'd introduce myself. I'm a 26 year old writer and eccentric from New England. That's the boring part.

I'm absolutely fascinated with orchids, and tragically in love with them. I really believe I'd choose a new orchid over groceries. That's the good part.

Mainly a big fan of cym. and e., though as I'm sure you all know, absolutely any orchid will do. I've started thinking about giving away my "normal" plants in order to make more room for orchids - anyone out there with this same malady? Realistically I'll end up keeping all of them and sleeping outside in order to give my buddies more room.

Anyway, great to be on here. I've already learned a bunch just from surfing around the past week or so. I'm looking forward to getting to know some people whose obsession peers my own, cause BOY are my friends sick of me telling them about orchids.

Hi Ry and welcome to Orchid Board.

I think we all know that feeling that the 'normal' plants take second place, and as you say 'any orchid will do'.

I only have a few orchids personally, but I'm absolutly obsessed with them. I should be working now, but admiring other peoples pics of Orchids is far more apealing.

I'm sure you'll love it here, this is a great place to learn about and enjoy orchids.

Before I got ino orchids, i just liked plants in general and had lots of the;. Then came the orchids, and I have less and less time and space to give to the 'normal' plants! I just don't know what to do with them. My 50 orchids keep me very very busy as it is.

You can talk all you want about orchids here, we feed off each others obsession, and encourage the purchase of even more orchids!

Remember: There's always room for one more! I thought that I had already maxed out my growing space but I did find room for 12 new orchids two weeks ago!

Hello Ry! Welcome to OB!

I haven't figured out if OB really stands for Orchid Board, or is short for obsession.
So how many orchids do you currently own and what types are you drawn to more than others? Do you have favorites????
My obsession goes in spells. First was Phals, then I was obsessed with Cattleyeas, then came Miltonias, and then the "Wow, that's an interesting orchid. I've got to have this one!" phase.

Now I'm just trying to get to a manageable point!

Anyway, welcome neighbor! You are among orchid fanatics here, so talk away!

An eccentric writer from New England sounds perfectly fine to me, it's the orchid OBsession that will get you into all kinds of trouble. Fortunately, you've come to the right place for support and encouragement. Jump right in, and have fun.

Welcome to the board!! Everyone here is gonna be really helpful in getting you to buy more plants! I got rid of most of my other plants along time ago to make room for the chids!

Thanks for the responses, guys. When I say "I have 12 orchids", I suppose what I mean is "I have 30 orchids but am in denial."

Got three beauties in the mail this morning...the one I'm most outwardly enthused by is a BEE-AY-YOOO-TIFUL Epigeneium amplum seedling mounted on cork from Olympic Orchids, who I'm just plain wild about.

That wasn't enough, so I had to go hit up local nurseries & garden centers for throw-outs or specimens past bloom...wound up with two nice looking Dendrobium (Emma Queen & World Cup #2 -- any additional info on their proper names would be superb). One of them's got a (seemingly) new active eye - quite the find for $2 each.

A friend of mine works at a nearby Lowe's and sells me the out-of-bloom chids for ridiculously cheap. Mostly I've been purchasing the aforementioned OOB's and seedlings. I much prefer to watch them grow. Blossoms are great and all, but my obsession with these plants starts from the roots up.

I'm a big fan of cymbidium, though I only have one. Don't know too too too much about them, so any help would be great. Same goes for the epigeneium - I wouldn't wanna kill my Epigeneium amplum, considering it's fairly rare in cultivation.

Hey Ry! I'm a 25-year-old cellist and eccentric from Pennsylvania, so you don't sound boring at all to me! Similarly enough, I choose new orchids over groceries quite frequently. They are such wonderful plants! What sort of things do you write????

Short stories, poetry, working on a novel. Have been working on said novel for years. Slow going, like orchids. I'm infinitely patient while waiting upon beauty.
