I am new to this site and to growing orchids

I am new to this site and to growing orchids. I am from Mass. I have 2 Dens and 2 Phals. The phals are easy but the Dens are taking some time to get used to. My first Den is just waking up and has what I believe is a new "plant shoot" on the cane. Do I need to remove and transplant this and when do I do this. I only use natural lighting by the way.

welcome to the forum!

The new growth on the Dendrobium, is it low on the cane on higher up? If it grows a certain amount above the medium it's a keiki. You don't have to remove keiki's, but you can once it has enough roots to feed itself.
If the new growth is on medium level, it's an "ordinarry" new growth. Don't remove that one as the larger the plant, the better it blooms in the future.

What kind of Dendrobium is? A cold or warm growing Dendrobium?
If you don't know, show is a picture of the plant, we might come up with a name.

Welcome Radiox. If the medium (which is the stuff around the roots) is broken down to all most dirt I would re pot it with fresh bark mix. Although you may want to repot anyway not knowing what the roots look like. As always pictures would make it easier to help.

Welcome to OB!! It sounds like you have a regular new growth on your dendrobium - I would leave it alone. If your media is very old and broken down, now is the time to repot, when growth is beginning in the spring. if its not too bad, leave it alone. Orchids thrive on neglect

THERE ARE FOUR CANES THE TALLEST ONE (ABOUT 10") JUST STARTED ONE AT THE VERY TOP. THE NEXT TALLER ONE (ABOUT 6 INCHES) HAS THE KEIKE SLIGHTLY ABOVE THE MEDIAN OF THE CANE.
