Default Welcome from a fellow Norwegian

Just so you know, we are a couple more Norwegians here. It's allways good to have somebody that understands the challenges with the Nordic climate (hot and dry indoors with cold windowsills in the winter, and cold and wet summers that all of a sudden go very sunny, dry and warm-ish for weeks if we're lucky).

I've just hit the point where I find I have too many orchids... didn't know there were such a thing, but I knew it when I found it takes too long to water. But the joy is ever so big when you manage to get something blooming again for the first time

Enjoy!

I have heard that you get sun light only for half of the year .Other half is dark .Is it true?
I have seen bonsai mangoes. Indeed with fruits.
But grown in a large pot .Let us informed/know about your mango plant.

Wink Misconceptions and truths about Nordic liht conditions ;)

Hi

So actually, parts of Norway (Nordics in fact) gets completely dark for a few months during winter because the sun never rises above the horizon, but that is just for a very few number of months, not half the year. In return, during the summer months, it will never get dark! The land of the midnight sun etc

So where I live, in Oslo (the capitol), during the winter months (say late Oct, Nov, and until first half of Feb) the days do get shorter. In Dec (the darkest month) it's dark when I go to work, and it's dark again when I leave work and we only work approx 8 hrs a day here. And since that is a fairly cold period you have all the haters on, so teh indoors conditions for Orchids is one of hot and very dry as well as little light.... Somehow they survive, but I'm considering setting up extra light for next season as I've aquired more orhicds that need more light.

I'd actually like to know what my fellow Norwegians do!? Or anybody else with similar winter conditions.

We all make silly mistakes, thats part of growing orchids. Many of us lust after what is not suitable in our climate as it is exotic. Look at me growing Lepanthes in Bangkok LOL....

Welcome to OB! I have a plumeria in my greenhouse ... it's really small right now, but like all good ideas, we shall see, right? Where in Norway are you? My husband and I were in Stavanger a while back. It was our first time to the Scandanavian region and it was beautiful and cold.... What other orchids are you interested in? I have a Hoya that is trying to take over the growing area! Glad you are here!
