Smile Spring is finally here, and so is the "Halm House"

The "Palm House" is finally done and we've started to move in, both people and plants! So with the very kind words in this forum I'm sure I'll be able to make the most out of it and probably succeed with the more cold growing orchids, finally!

In Norway the winter is really hard as the long, dark and freezing winter makes the indoor air hot and dry from all the heating (panel ovens and fireplace). Humidity is below 40% at its worst. And I'm not prepared to build a tank for my orhids, that's beyond pragmatic..

Just posted a new topic under propagation as I need to divide some of my Zygopetalums that are busting out of their pots (really, one pot got broken! )

Looking forward to discussions here, and I'll make sure to post pictures (got some of the "Palm House") and let you know of all my trails and errors, including lack of trying...

See ya!

I've always wanted to visit Norway. Isn't that the home of Greig?

Welcome to the forum, it's the best!

A belated welcome to OrchidBoard! I couldn't agree more with your statements about wanting things that will just grow in the conditions that you can provide. I also grow in windowsills mostly. Tthough I did convert an old aquarium and an Exo-Terra vivarium for growing orchids - they are basically to help me with watering (i.e. not having to worry about spilling water or getting other things wet) and to increase the humidity around the plants somewhat. Both of those 'tanks' are open topped and have no additional lighting/heating/cooling/fans/ etc... My philosophy is "keep it simple"!

I've found that Masdevallia (and most other Pleurothallids) do well in the conditions that I can give them - they are happy on my windowsills.

Your orangerie sounds fantastic - and I hope one day I will have something similar!
