Introduction - Orchid Board

Hello,

I have viewed many orchid Board threads in past looking for answers about orchids. I have finally registered and am pleased to be part of your fine group of orchid lovers.
I am lucky enough to live in Weston, FL (west of Ft. Lauderdale near the Everglades). I started growing Vandas mostly, now grow (or try) 'most everything' that will take warm-hot conditions. I especially like Bulbophyllums, Miniatures and Species.

I take pictures of all my orchids when they bloom and keep a lot of them on flickr.com so I can send the link to others that want to see.

Hello Jim,

Loved your pictures. I have seen you flying around here! Were you up there over 75 on Thursday? Looks like a blast!!! I live in The Lakes off Indian Trace. However I grew up in Miami and have orchid companions all my life. I can't imagine not having them around me. Weston is an easy place to grow orchids, right? However I have to hide my ramshackle orchid shack from the code enforcement spys.

Hehe! I have it pretty hidden. Surrounded by areca palms.

So no complaints or citations yet.

I am getting ready to go to the Tamiami Show. So hopefully I have to chids to share later. Look forward to meeting you in person someday.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately that was not me flying around on Thursday, that was a guy named Carlos who is an OBGYN. He flies out of a private strip in SW Ranches on 172nd st. Mine is hangared down in Homestead.Hey were you at the tamiami show on Sunday afternoon? I was there talking with the COS folks and they told me someone else from Weston was there at the same time. I wish I had a shade house or 'orchid shack', but with the pesky association rules I cannot. I grow them around the patio inside my screened in pool area...not ideal as my backyard faces due west. i think we may have had the same 'bug guy', Henry. He used to tell me that he had a customer in Weston that grew oechids and had a 'shack' that he sprayed in...could that have been you?
Anyway, perhaps we will meet up at another upcoming show, like miami or redlands. You going to either of those?

Hello Jim,

Yes, I was the other Weston person at the Tamiami show and I was talking to the COS people too! I posted a thread with pictures from the show, including the ones I got.

Yes, I am going to the Miami show and the Redlands show. I never miss a show! Maybe I will see you at one of those.

No, not my bug guy. Actually I don't have any bugs in the orchid house. At least, none that I can't handle! Hehe. I don't have a screen enclosure and my only shade tree blew away durning Wilma. So I had to build a little shack for the orchids. There are some pictures of it in my gallery.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone started a Weston Orchid Club!!
