What we find works really good is chop sticks. If the chop stick is moist when you pull it out then your medium is still damp. This way after a while of checking it you will see how long your medium is staying wet. That has helped us out alot with growing in the house.

Thanks for the tip, I might give it a try. My milts are in small (3") pots, so I'm not sure how well that will work. I'm afraid I would inadvertently break some roots? I used to have a big pack of skewers around somewhere - maybe I'll try those.
It's dry her as well, so I'm getting a lot of practice in when to water and when to wait. Right now I'm watering the milts 3x per week, and the others (phals & catt) 2x per week. Watering so much horrifies my Mom, who's definitely a weakly weekly person. She lives in a very different climate (Lancaster, PA) and therefore has higher humidity and less light. She just doesn't need to water as much.
I'm having fun with my new light & temp/humidity meters. No surprise that it's dry in the house (25-30%), but with the humidity trays is ~40% in the leaf area of the plants. Still pretty dry, so I try to mist in the morning before I leave for work. I'll check the levels at work next week.
I seem to have plenty of light by the sliders, and so might try a vanda if I can find one which isn't a big investment.
