Hello
Smile Hello

Hello there:
I only started with Orchids last summer after visiting an Orchid show at Scone Palace, Scotland.
I'm a complete beginner and trying to learn everything I can to keep my orchids going.
I bought some Oncidiums, a cambria and was given a Cymbidium. I believe these ar cool/intermediate orchids and I keep them on a north facing window (which I know isn't ideal) however I only have a South facing window in the living room and West in the kitchen.
I also have a jewel orchid.
I live in Scotland on a croft so the temperatures can get quite cold.
I keep the orchids on a tray of pebbles and have Bloom fertiliser for them which I use 1 in 3 waterings but I don't water too much. I do spray them with rainwater.
My problem is that a couple of the orchids have yellowing leaves and one in particular that I repotted- the Cymbidium- it's bulbous section is slightly shrivelled.
The jewel orchid has some fading leaves too. This has been moved to the middle of the room on a divider so it is warmer.
I would really appreciate any advice, suggestions and help to keep my orchids going.
I did wonder if I should purchase some kind of heated mat to maintain temeprature.
I look forard to hearing from anyone
Regards
Janice

Hi Dan
Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm looking forward to getting lots of tips.
I'm now off for a walk to find some sphagnum moss to revive a rescued orchid.
Cheers
Janice

Hi Janice...

Shriveling bulbs is a sign of underwatering or possibly a bad root system. Are the roots on the Cym healthy? If they are, you need to water it a bit more, they like their water They also like very high light so if you can get it to a place where it will receive as much light as possible, just short of burning the leaves, it'll be much happier

Thanks Suzanne
I've just checked the roots...should have said it was the oncidium (it's all very confusing).
Anyway, as you said the roots don't look too great. There are some that are fine but others look rotten. Would that be overwatering the plant?
I read somewhere about sphagnum moss and bagging the orchid to encourage more roots.
Would this be the method to use or just put it back in the pot and try the south facing window?
Thanks for your help
Janice
