New herefrom cold cold missouri...

cold yes.. -3 this morning..not as cold as some places.. lol but when you have to milk in this weather 2 times a day out in the open and elements.. it gets.. cold big time..
i live out in the country here.. not much of a city person.. im not a total beginner tho i am stil learning..
mounted my first orchid a couple months ago.. so far so good..( a unknown phal.)

im actualy trying my hand at hybridizing.. i crossed my golden bells phal. (someone said it was a peloric orchid?)
with a dark dark purple unnamed phal.. with a perfect big flower shape.. . so far i have 2pods growing.. and i crossed the dark purple on a similar shaped almost pure white.. also 2 pods.. what i need to do now is find a honest company that can flask them for me..

the orchids are not the only tropical plants i have.. i have a full sized orange tree.. 3 dwarf citrus.. orange lemon and key lime..
lemmon grass.. my tomatoes.. god only knows what else..
we do heat with wood.. so i have to constantly keep a bucket of water on top of the wood stove to keep humidity in the air.
sure hope spring comes fast.. during summer time i keep the orchids outside where they thrive like crazy.
and it makes it easier on me too lol.
later in march.. my mother promised to let me order a few orchids online.. havent yet decided on a vendor.. but i definately want unusual.. not the normal store orchids.. love the ones i have but i want more.. lol.

Great photo and welcome to the board. Glad to have you here! As for the cows.... well...... have no advice! Other than get them some blankets! We're minus whatever here and no hope of summer anytime soon. So I wish you luck with the livestock. Just a quick question (in jest) if you milk this time of year do you get ice cream? Just wonderin'

lol pretty darned close.. and since she is a black/brown cow.. its chocolate too! lol. o i guarantee you nothing is like fresh cow milk.. the excess mixed with water makes a great garden fertilizer too..

does anyone remember those hardy orchids.. the ones that came as bulbs? at the stores? i cant remember for the life of me what species they were.. and they were orchids too..
when i was young it suprised me.. not to mention that missouri has more species of orchid endemic to the area than hawaii does.. and i remember comming across a tiney spike of white orchids in a indiana farm field.. small and well scented.. i think it was ladies treses? or something to that affect.

i do believe thats it! its been.. well.. i was 16 at the time im 34 now. ages.. lol.. pretty hardy little flower and it was surrounded by 3 foot grasses.. im not sure. but it was either summer or early fall that i saw it. as the grasses were brown or turning that.

Lady's tresses I've seen here in Normandy, France, growing in a garden on the sea front. Could that be the same one? They must be fairly hardy, as there's quite a lot of wind in this part of the world!

Welcome to the board!, I grow a few 'Lady tresses' (Spiranthes odorata) they do bloom in the fall just when the frost starts here.

i think orchids are some pretty nice missunderstood plants.. most people think orchids andthink.. hot tropical plants. but dont see the orchids andsome verry nice ones just behind our own woods.. ..i woul dlove to find a source of wild type orchids that do well here in missouri to naturalize a small patch of woods i have.
