Polka's Icebreaker -- a little bit about me
Howdy from East Texas
Thought I would come here, finally, and post an ice-breaker about myself.
In late November, 1997, I found myself unemployed, looking to start a greenhouse business, maybe wholesale, six-pack herbs, or something. Turned out I didn't have the capital, et al, and was looking for anything at that point. My mother-in-law saw a local ad for part time greenhouse help. I applied, and got the job.
It was to repot this lady's orchids on her private estate. They offered me full time position later in Feb, 1998. I've been there ever since. I've only killed maybe 2 of her cultivars. (knock-knock) I've been very fortunate to grow and rebloom orchids for her. She has several hundred varieties, way too many noids, all housed in a 90 x 30 cattleya greenhouse, and a 48 x 12 highlight, cool-in-the-winter house (where I have the cymbidiums). We have nearly 1200 pots from 6 inch to 3 gallon for the orchids. Mostly Catts, Dendies, Phals, Oncids, and Cymbidiums.
Several members here, I remember seeing at other orchid forums, notably GardenWeb. They should possibly remember me, as I am using the very same username/handle.
I haven't been to hardly any forums until lately. Have been promoted to forman at the estate, and about three years ago, joined the local orchid society. Immediately became an officer, and worked at publicity. It is an older club, about to celebrate our fiftieth anniversary, and we're just now beginning to get some new, younger members. Oh, I also started up their current newsletter, and I am their editor at present. If you go to see their web page, be patient---it is new, and we're only just starting to put things up there. I kinda like the newsletter editor's job. Kinda like a monthly presentation without having to stand up and speak to them -- Ha!
I will be married twenty years this coming summer; I have two boys aged 15, and 13; I have a local dance/polka band, and I play the accordian; I am assistant scout master for my boy's scout troop. I am also earning every gray hair that is left on my head -- Ha!
I am enjoying this forum, and web-site, and am learning to navigate it. Am looking forward to joining in the conversations, posting pictures, and peddling some of the extras -- do you know what it is like to go thru a repotting, and keep everything, and nothing dies??? I've got sometimes 15 or more of somethings. I kept them thinking some wouldn't make it, but no.............<stupid grin>.............So, I will probably try to sell or trade from time to time.
I really enjoy big catts, and oncid intergenerics, especially whites in both these flavors.
Thanks for the opportunity to be here.
Take care
Rex
