Smile Hi, I'm starting over

Hi, I' m Eric. I got hooked on orchids years ago when I was in hort. school at Norfolk Botanical Gardens in Va. I used to go in the city g.h and check the orchids out. One day the guy that ran the g.h gave my a division of a Catt. After that I went crazy getting more and more orchids. Built a g.h and filled it with chids.Probably 150 plants, my own piece of paradise. I ended up moving and had to give up my plants. Twenty years later I'm starting over. Things have changed so much since then as far as potting mediums and names, culture for some. I never heard of S/H for orchids before. Anyway lots to learn over and new things. I've been on here far a while so I know this is the place to be. Just never posted before. Glad I found O.B!
Eric

Welcome, Eric! Its great to have you here. I know all about 'starting over' as I've done it twice now! The first time I grew orchids, I was still in high school and had a nice little collection of Phals and Catts. When I went away to university, I gave my plants away. University turned into a job, a series of house moves, starting a family, etc. So, there I found myself, after so many years, starting another small collection (this time of Masdevallia) after having moved over from the US to England. After 4 years, we got sent to live in India for 2 years, and the plants had to again be 'farmed out' to friends. Alas, none of them were still alive when I got back, so I was once again starting from scratch just over three years ago.

It is fun and exciting, in a way, as I can remember being absolutely floored at the yellow Phals that were being sold as pot plants in the supermarkets! When I had first been growing, they were just starting to produce some watery yellow attempts in breeding in that direction. (I remember having a Bamboo Baby all those years ago - if my memory is any good at all - and thinking how wonderful and unique its colouring was.)

I'm sure you will enjoy this hobby, like me, more than you ever did before! And Orchid Board is one of the reasons why!

Again, welcome!!
