Just joined the forum this morning after finding it through a search for a specific culture.

I live in Massachusetts and am looking to do better by my orchids. I have grown (and I use the term very loosely) them for about 12 years. They have summered outside the last couple of years, but still suffer dreadfully during the winter.

Hope to learn a lot!!

What types of 'chids do you have up there in Massachusetts?

I grow a number of different types, trying to stick with ones that should do well in the house, which I know can limit options.

I currently have a number of mini's (aeragngis fastuosa, leptotoes bicolor, neo, onicid, 2 laelia alaorii, den aberrans, also x johnsoniae "snowflake", and several others) in a lighted aquarium (55watt CFL). Have some mounted in there as well, but it's a big pain to keep them from drying out.

Also have a couple of phals and paphs, some iwanagaras, a sharry baby in several other spots in the house.

The problem is that nothing is thriving!!

Lin, we have a number of people growing some of their 'chids in vivs and tanks. I'm sure one or two of them will share their 'secrets' for keeping them happy

Welcome Lin. You've come to the right place to learn about orchid care and to learn how to be more consistent with growing. There is no reason why you can't keep orchids doing well in the home if you are successful outdoors in summer. Just explore this site, the vendors listed under Topsites and ask questions. Be sure to post photos (why not create a gallery?) and we'll do our best to help out. Again, welcome aboard.

Aboard Lin, its great to have you join our community, it's great fun and the family is huge. A wealth of informaiton awaits you and please do not hesitate to ask a question, we all started the same way, one chid at a time. Sounds like you have a great collection going on...I myself grow indoors and with that comes...each day is a learning experience. It's been hard for me to go from outdoor gardening to strickly indoors and places a whole new meaning on trial and error. Once again Aboard ! ! !
