Smile greetings from Kentucky

I'm Nicki from the lovely state of Kentucky. I've currently got 6 or 7 orchids (a variety of kinds) that I've saved from Walmart/Home Depot/etc (gotta love $5 orchids!)

I look forward to getting to know all of you

oh and a quick thanks to whomever added all these wonder smilies! I love them and collect banana smilies

Welcome to the board Dorothy (my wife's name.) I would recommend posting a seperate post under the Phalenopsis section. But as a general rule, I would suggest the following:

Chances are you plant came in a clear pot inside a ceramic decor pot. Keep the plastic pot, retire or ditch the ceramic pot. Clear pots are your friend.

Now, with that out of the way, clear pots allow you to check in on the condition of the roots. Before watering, you want to see white or yellowish roots. Green roots mean they are wet and not ready to water.

Keep the plant in a very bright window (like east or even south window). When the pot suggests the roots are getting dry (whitish) then soak the whole pot in water. I try to use weak fertilizer everytime I water, but this isn't a requirement.

Don't move the plant around to lots of different locations or directions while the spike is developing. This will make for weird flowers at best, and even make the buds drop at worst. Once the spike is done with the blooms, some folks (like me) like to clip off the spent spike to allow the plant to gain strength. Others try to keep the spike going with more (but weaker) flowers. As a beginner, I recommend you gain some experience before trying this.

If you don't get more responses, I'd suggest reposting under the Phalenopsis section of the board.

Glad you chose to join, and welcome aboard.

Hey Nicki! This is a great forum, with lots of knowledgeable and experienced growers. Plenty of us youngsters too. Glad you found us!

Oh, and I kind of like the bananas too.
