hello from nc
hello, i am new and i thot i would intro myself. i have grown orchids for over 30 years in my home, mostly cattleya types. i just built my greenhouse (from a kit) last year and i have gone ape crazy buying orchids untill my little 12x24 greenhouse is packed. i love all my orchids, and i have every type imaginable right now except the real warm growers. i have nite temps at 55degrees and daytime at 90ish. so far all the babies have thrived and i havent encountered major problems with culture. i had a bout of phal crown rot which i treated with peroxide, and a few aphids which i neemed to death, and several hungry slugs which caused me grief for a bit....i am battling the light right now, i think i took off my shade cloth too soon and some of my catts have purple leaf syndrome....my biggest problem right now is the size of my greenhouse IT IS TOO SMALL! I love cattleyas of all shapes and sizes. i hope to start painting the orchids as soon as i get my art studio cleaned out and useable. thats about it, glad to be here and i hope to share info with you all. thanks, dou

If your greenhouse is too small, I'll gladly take it off your hands!
Honestly, people with greenhouses complaining about not having enough space! Count yourself lucky!
Ok, I was just kidding. But I am jealous of anyone with a greenhouse. My parents have taunted me for years by toying with the idea of getting one. I keep hoping I'll come home from college to see a great big conservatory just waiting to be filled with orchids!
Anywhooo.... Welcome to OB! Ask lots of questions, post lots of and share what you know...and just have fun!

Hi Dounoharm,
Welcome to the OB!
It sounds like you have a wonderful collection. I can't wait to more photos. The paph is beautiful...or is that a phrag?
I had to laugh about your new greenhouse being too small...they are always too small! My shade house is the same size as yours, and it was too small shortly after it was built too.

i think 'TOO SMALL' is part of the definition for greenhouse, lol....it took me near 50years to get one of my own greenbean, so dont give up hope, you will get one someday. all it takes is a little money and a LOT of work, not counting the hair-pulling sessions. it was a major excursion to build, but i wouldnt trade the trip for anything. and yes david, its a phrag, sorcerers apprentice x besseae, and the blooming spike is nearing 4 feet! i will learn how to label my pics as i go along....lucky i found how to post one. i am still working on the gallery here. so much to learn to be able to communicate! i hope to see you all in later conversations! dou

Art studio! How cool. I'd love to see pictures of your artwork when you're up an running with it agian.
And as for that greenhouse... lucky ducky!! I've been eyeing the kits lately. But I don't have a whole lot of room in my yard and each time I see one of the kits, even the bigger ones... I say "Nope, too small."

well, nichole, any size beats NO size when it comes to greenhouses....but bigger is easier to heat and cool and keep steady temps. i think mine is the smallest i could deal with and the largest of the kits i could envision. i didnt want a big hoop thingie.i will post some pics of it soon. but get one if you can, why deprive yourself of pleasure? heeheee!
