While I have been growing orchids, sort of, for about 10 years, I am only now beginning to feel like an intermediate. I live in Gloucester, MA and grow entirely on windowsills. I am fortunate in having one or more plants in flower at all times and have a modest variety.

I just purchased an orchid with a label that says "Burr. Stefan Isler 'Dos Pinhos' ". What does Burr. stand for?

Welcome Joelws. Glad to have you here. Burr stands for Burrageara which is an intergeneric cross between Cochlioda x Miltonia x Odontoglossum and Oncidium. An intergeneric takes on the cultural characteristics of the parents in the percent of the mix of the parents. I haven't looked up this particular mix, but you can safely say it likes rather high light, likes high water when growing and a bit less when not growing, and cool temps during winter and a bit warmer in summer. That's pretty generic for a cross such as this. We can look up this cross and give more specific culture if you want.

Thanks, Ross. That was helpful. The likes that you listed generally are what I can give orchids. Time will tell.
