Thank you both for the warm welcome!

Royal, welcome to the AOS! I am working with the web committee to bring even more great stuff to the website. Have you seen the Orchids Magazine bonus material? There is a great link to a photo gallery from the 32nd Colombian International Orchid Show.

I am working on figure out how to get an orchid at my house. Like I said I live in a very small condo with bad light (and a cat that like to eat plants). My parents are interested in my help ( ) with some orchids in their palm trees. I'm going to try and help them with that over thanksgiving. Right now I enjoy the Orchids at the AOS when I need to give my eyes a break from the computer.

Brian is a great example of the latest outreach from the AOS along with Ron McHatton who is traveling the entire country and visiting with societies and judges.

This is a very positive trend and such interaction with all facets of the orchid community is the best way to keep the AOS alive as a viable entity.

Thanks for reaching out to groups such as Orchidboard!
Thank you for your kind words and welcome.

Yes Carlos has brought great leadership and all the staff is very appreciative of the work Ron is doing for us.

I (we) want to keep this trend alive and help grow the orchid community as whole.

Brian

Might I suggest two possible solutions to your cat and light dilemma?

First, consider a terrarium. It can be as big or small as you like, elaborate or simple. Check out the terrarium forums for advice! I've been posting there to get some advice myself.

Second, and this might be just a little cheaper. Get cat grass. My cat used to chew on my houseplants too , until I started growing a pot of grass just for her. The little demon just wanted some salad You should be able to get seed (cheepest) or grass that's already been grown (more convenient, considering your space and light issues) at any pet store.

and welcome to the OB!

Hi Brian. I'm an AOS member too. Besides changes to the website, it seems there have been changes to 'Orchids' magazine too -- a wider variety of articles and more orchid photos. I'm enjoying those updates so far!

Well the cat issue might resolve itself in a few months. The poor guy took a turn for the worse yesterday. He had a seizure (he is almost 20). He has lost a lot of weight over the past year. Even with this he rules the house.

We tried the grass...didn't seem to be as interesting as colorful flowers.

Over thanksgiving I will be mounting a couple orchids at my parents house. Their house back ups to a natural area. They are excited about it.

Ah, well, the grass was worth a try. I guess once they get to that age they're too set in they're ways to change. Or maybe he just thinks that since he's so old he should be pampered with flowers! hehe. If you grow orchids at your parents house you can have the best of both worlds, and your parents get to enjoy the orchids too!

Sorry to hear that your cat is sick. Over the years cat grass has worked well for me, and kept my 2 cats satisfied with greens of the non-orchid variety. Occasionally when one of them wants to complain about something, they know that a bite to an orchid leaf quickly gets my attention!

Hi Brian and Welcome to the OB! I am a little late on joining this thread, I don't know how I missed it! Anyways.....I hope your kitty is doing ok, and you should really look into an orchidarium I have two, and now I think I need a greenhouse

And I have seen the Magazine Bonus Material on the website, I thought that was really cool and was wondering how long I had been missing it. I love my Orchids Magazine and I am like a kid in a candy store when it comes in the mail!

It's great to have you here with us!
