Hi from Devon Male
Default Hi from Devon

I have just joined the board and thought that I would introduce myself. I live in south Devon, not too far from Burnham Orchids, which is helpful! I have been keeping a few orchids for around 20 years.

As i don't have specialised facilities for keeping them I tend to be fairly careful about which ones I buy. My collection is mainly comprised of dendrobiums, but includes a few others, including a cymbidium rescued from a garden compost heap in Germany. This has shown its gratitude by still not flowering - the reason its exasperated former owner threw it there in the first place.

Anyhow, I'll be happy to exchange views with anyone who cares to get in touch. I don't pretend to be any sort of expert, just enthusiastic, and I do have a penchant for rescuing sorry looking specimens from garden centres!

Hello! I was just down your way last weekend for the British Orchid Council Congress. It was in Dawlish Warren at the Langstone Cliff Hotel. There were loads of fantastic plants and really great displays from regional societies across the UK and even from Germany.

Welcome to Orchid Board - the greatest place to learn and share about orchids on the web! Its always nice to meet someone else from the UK here.

Welcome aboard, seawall. You're going to fit right in, almost all of us have rescued at least one baby from a garden center hell. Have fun.

I went across to the Langstone Cliff myself, not difficult as I only live about 2 miles away. Came away with a couple of Dendrobiums, one of which is likely to be the subject of a question on here shortly. My partner had a Paph, which was bought from a very friendly and helpful German exhibitor. And to all of you on this thread, thanks for the welcome.

There were a couple of very nice German nurseries there - and they had some great Paphs. I got one myself. I also was lucky enough to get a nice multi-growth Phrag. besseae var. flava which I'm really excited about.

Ask away about your Dendrobium! That's what we're here for!

Hi Devon,

Welcome to the OB!

I really appreciate your enthusiasm, and hope that you are able to have some fun while you are here...I know that you will.

I have been known to rescue a plant or two from garden centers too...you are not alone.

If you have any photos of your orchids, don't be shy about posting them. We all love photos.
