Default Hello

I've been told by the site that I shouldn't be a lurker and should say hello. So hello everyone. I'm a beginner to the orchid thing even though I've been trying to grow them for about 8 months now. I've gone the cheap route on a few and picked them up from the dreaded Home Depot and also picked up a few from members of the local orchid society as well as a professional grower. As you can probably imagine the professionally grown plants are doing the best.
Biggest challenges right now are lighting. My main source of light is from a Western window, so I just suplemented it with some low wattage grow lights. I'm trying to keep the electric bill low. My other biggest challenge and what may of been the nail in the coffin for a few of my plants, time will tell, it that my cat loves to chew on the leafy varieties such as Oncidiums. I've Isolated those plants for now in a small aquarium since they are small. I've picked up some cheap dendrobiums since he doesn't like the thick waxy type leaves of plants.
Well regardless I'm glad I've got myself an interested hobby to pursue. I just hope I manage to be successful at it.

You're right about orchids being an interesting hobby. In fact, it can go from interesting to fascinating to an all-out obsession.
