Hello everyone! I thought I should say hi instead of just lurking on this nice website! I bought my first phalaenopsis early this year, and now suddenly find myself with four, all phals. (Strange how that happens.) I have a bad habit of picking up sorry-looking specimens that are on their last legs. After a few weeks of living in my south-facing sunroom, they perk up and start blooming and shooting off weird tendrils. I think they're happy. I confess I don't know what the parts are called YET, but I will learn. I can't wait to get the advice and information that I know you can all offer me. I'll definitely need help on repotting -- these things are starting to look like green octopi! Thanks in advance for the help.

and Welcome!

I'm rather new to orchids myself, but I had a similar question regarding the same part. I believe, without a picture, your "tendrils" are roots. When I began with phals, I had one that had this thick looking white thing with a green tip coming from the stalk, up and became aerial like tip. I wanted to cut it off until I learned it was a healthy root. That same plant today has developed several 'aerial' roots and keeps blooming its behind off.

If I'm wrong, one of the experienced members here will be along to correct me and help us both

Hello Haadi!
Welcome! I believe you are right, those would be roots and phals love to sprawl out into the air! That is a sign of a happy plant. Sounds like you are well on your way to being an orchid nut like us!
Be sure to post pics when you can. We love so feel free.
Any questions, please ask...meanwhile enjoy browsing the OB.

Haadi,

Welcome to the OB.

I look forward to pics of your beautiful green octopi! Remember, good roots make good flowers...or in your case good tendrils make good flowers. I am guessing here that what you called tendrils are actually aerial roots, which are quite common on phals. If you post a photo, I bet we could provide you with information that will help you identify the parts of phal plants, and it would be neat using your own plant as the example.

I look forward to seeing more posts from you.
