one year member finally posts! - Orchid Board

I logged in today and find a message that says "seems you've never posted here, why not say hello?"
It appears that the last date I was here was Sept 24th of 2007! Yikes

So i'm intro'ing myself. I live in Germany and have 2 orchid plants. They're much less trouble than my 4 children, but I am a complete novice. Both plants were given to me at Thanksgiving as gifts from a couple whom i've hosted at our family Turkey day feast two years in a row. Turkey is not a German tradition so many view it as a treat to be invited to share an American family tradition.

Although I knew nothing about orchids before acquiring one 2 years ago, i've managed to keep it alive. It even started growing really well for awhile. Unfortunately it has never flowered again. I have a friend who is a member here who suggested i join, which i did, but then I was too busy to get on here and check things out.

Our family was home in the states for a month this summer and both of my plants suffered somewhat under the less than knowlegeable eye of a kind neighbor. So i am going to check around here and see what i can find out to bring my Phal and Dendrobium back to health...hopefully.

So you should see me around here asking some questions sometime soon now that the kids are back in school!

Hi Verena. If you've been looking around for a while, you probably know that you'll find a lot of advice about your chids, and maybe your kids too. Have fun.

Welcome back to the fold! The OB is a great place to get information and tips. I'm fairly new to orchids, too and I'm sure you'll find what you need to get your 'chids back on track. I'll help any way I can with my limited experince. I do know that pics help alot to get good answers to problems.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! I broke down yesterday and bought a new plant because i'm worried that my other 2 are slowly biting the dust.

My phal has lost all it's paddle leaves. My Dendro keeps starting stalks and then abandons them. I think it has yet again, begun a new growth. time will tell. At least now i'm home for a bit and can try to keep an eye on them:

Welcome Verena. Glad you chose to join. Rest assured, no one here has become the "expert" they think they are without killing a few orchids. That's how we learn. I personally have learned I can't grow Dendros to "save my soul" unless they require winter dormancy. That, I've got down

Phals and I don't, generally agree, only because of space issues. They aren't hard to grow (actually they are easy) but they tak so much space. I have settled in on Paphs (slipper orchids) as easy to grow and don't take much space.

Hope you choose to share photos with us, because we love photos.
