You will still have to physically remove the scale. It can be dead yet it still needs to be removed. What I do is put rubbing alcohol on a paper towel, drenched and wipe off the hard scale. Then I quaranteen the plant from the others. Then I spray the affected plant along with all the others on both sides of the leaves with my mixture. Everyone in the Houston Orchid Society uses this treatment for when they see scale or just as a preventive maintenence.

Another good thing to have on hand is one of those curved dental tools. They're really good for getting down into the leaves and pulling out anything that's there.
