...I mean one time at a grocery store, ...a "Piggly Wiggly", I picked up a Phal with lots of big snow white blooms! 'Twas the spring of '98. It hung out in a shaded window for a couple of months! <<<fade to black>>>
Hi ,my name is Lee and I'm an orchid addict...
I have 500 plus Os now and a D-I-Y two story greenhouse directly behind the house.
I chose "Savor" because I 'save' (get it?) orchids like other people save (insert a collectible) especially species. Also since I feel each and every orchid is to be 'savored'. My favorite orchid is any one with a fragrance (okay, a pleasant fragrance)!
I have the equipment setup in my hobby lab and have been marginally successful in my first solo attempt at flasking. The "capsule" (not a seed pod as I have been taught by a judge in Atlanta, initials A.L.) was Epi. lacustre. One of 4 flasks has survived 2 months! I have selfed and crossed orchids having about ten capsules. I am choosing to go the route of mature dry seed sowing.
I am IN with both feet! I have travelled thrice to Ecuador and think we should all contribute if only a few bucks to the preserves being established there or anywhere in the world. I plan to do the same here too. I'm "in training" to lead some tours to experience orchids in situ. I would like for these tours to be in part fund raisers to spare orchids from the "Killing Fields". I also subscribe to the school of thought that by providing species cultivated from seed, we help spare the orchids growing in the wild. We can even help to re-establish them in their home range. We simply must return funds to forests and fields to ensure the habitats are preserved.
At a time when many are getting out of the businesses of orchids, I am strategically planning to enter.
Thanks for the invitation to jump into the forums...I look forward to lurking again...
...I tend to post only when I have some pertinent actual experience to share with someone or to help someone find what they are looking for here. I'll be over here soaking up everything that ya'll contribute...Thanks!
