I've been keeping Orchids for about 5 or 6 years. I'm doing pretty good, only lost about 5 babies, but each one I lose feels like a huge loss to me as I am so excited to see them grow and bloom. It took me awhile to get used to the Phalenopsis not needing so much light but I finally got it. I seem to have the best luck with the dendrobiums and have one that blooms twice a year. It is my oldest orchid. The ones I seem to have the hardest time with are the cattelayas. However I'm getting better with them. Any advice for the baby cats would be helpful. I am still a novice, have tried to do seeds once, but didn't work out. Would love to get into the intricate parts of this great hobby.
You're sure to find lots of info here. I started much the same way, Phals, Dends, then Cats. I like to try to push them to the limit too. I find that Cattleyas really like to be pushed. As long as you watch that the leaves don't burn (just take it slow), increase the light until the leaves are pale green. Red and yellow - ease up a bit.
Hi Ed. There sure are some intricate parts to this hobby, some complicated discussions and a lot of rewards. Welcome to the Board and I hope you enjoy your time here. Check out the Forum listing for some of the "finer points".
ED and to the OB !!!! Catts for me seem to be the easiest thing to grow but then I'm in a favorable environment. They multiply like weeds down here. Lots of light; they love sunlight. We'll be looking forward to seen some of your chids !!!
