Hey Royal, if you think my title said something. I rescued a plant from a house that was being leased but vacant. The plant has a stem that looked like sugar cane. Plus there are a couple of other shoots that popped. So I filled the pot up with water and have kept if filled. Then I was told it was an orchid. But it's got shoots that are going to flower. So I truly don't know. I guess I'll have to show you photo's. Anyway, it's living well in a pool of water.lol

OK, you're scaring me here! This is not a Phal, it appears to be a dendrobium. Am I losing it here?

Since we're talking about cutting spikes, you say to cut the spike just at the first node. Are you supposed to cut above, or below the node?

Hi Janet,
Above the first node coming UP from the base of the plant. It might be an inch, it might be 3 inches, each plant is a bit different.

Hi Peter,
This plant looks like a dendrobidum. You've done very well with it so far BUT, get it out of that pool of water..........
Dens aren't my thing so we will have to hope someone else will come in and help you with this one.
message to Ross, I think 'we' are o.k.

Hi again Peter,
It gets a bit confusing when you write about one plant and show a pic of another.
On the Phal., click on this link for basic information, if you give the Phal. proper care, i.e., what it needs, it will blossom for you. Everyone's growing conditions are different so I can't tell you that in 3 months you will have a spike. It all depends on how you take care of it.
Again, click on this link, this is basic culture/care information for phals.

If you google for "Phalaenopsis culture" you will find lots of info. on how to care for your plant and everyone here wants to have you succeed, so keep the questions coming.

there Peter !!! I've got a Phalaenopsis that is doing the same thing as yours. No roots but it's putting out a new leaf. It had massive root rot and I rescued it and I'm nurturing back to health. The other picture is that one of a Dendrobium. My advice would be to take it out of the water ASAP and to pot it in bark. If you leave it in the wate you will eventually end up with root rot and might loose the plant. They need to dry out in between watering and I don't think that it can happen by doing what you are doing. with you chids

OK, Thanks ALL.
I should have started another thread, for the other plant considering that "now I know it's an orchid" (LOL) but..... I didn't mean to confuse anyone.
I cut the first plant the phal, powdered the cut so it was finished.
The other "Dendrobium", I emptied out the water, twice, and re-potted it, watered it for the new bark/soil and will now leave it alone until it looks like it needs more water. At least this pot has a hole in the bottom/base so it can drain.
I'll take another photo "if" (when) it flowers and place it here.

Hi Peter,
Don't worry about the other plant, we figured it out and that's all that counts.
We all started here or with compters for the first time sometime so we were all newbies once and I for one am still learning my way around the Orchidboard.
Be sure to keep us posted.

Hi Peter and welcome to OB. You don't need my because everybody else gave you great info. I started out knowing not much about orchids and had 2 with a shipment coming from Hawaii. I learned a lot through the forums and help was always there for me. Enjoy your chids and look out for the 'Orchid Bug' once bitten you can never look back. You only see all the cool chids you want to order/rescue or trade. Then stay up nights thinking of where to put them.
