not only confused about the forums....but I am learning, but also confused about orchids. I have always been interested in them. I have quite the green thumb and am building a greenhouse to start growing exotic plants. I just need to learn about orchids more. I was able to purchase 5 plants from an orchid dealer going out of business for $35 for all of them. I will be visiting her soon for tips, thank goodness. Ran across this page and had to join. 1 uick question though, she told me to put rubbing alcohol on all the leaves, why!!?? Thanks and I look forward to meeting you all and learning!!

Welcome to the board! I'm sure you'll learn lots just browsing around on here and if you have any questions feel free to ask! Everyone here is really friendly and helpful. Thats so cool that you are building a greenhouse. I'm very jealous!

I'm not really sure about the rubbing alcohol. I know it's often used to kill various pests on orchids. I supposed it wouldn't hurt to use a little on a paper towel or cotton ball and wipe down the leaves since you have new arrivals. If you don't have a problem I wouldn't keep doing it though. I would think that it may be too drying on the leaves if you do it on a regular basis. If you just want to shine up the leaves use lemon juice. It works great! Maybe someone with more experience will chime in.

Hello and welcome!!!!
I'm wondering if the seller suspected mealybugs or something. That would be the only reason to use alcohol that I know of. As Sarah said, for making the leaves clean or shiny it would be lemon or lime juice on them. Check them close to make sure there isn't something lurking. Don't worry about it one way or the other, it's fixable.
You'll enjoy growing orchids. It is so rewarding to see them come into bloom; to perform for you.
If you have time, please post pictures of your new orchids. We all love pictures. We will help you all we can. Again, welcome!
