Coming back to orchids - selling my extras
Default Coming back to orchids - selling my extras

Hi - I used to be quite enthusiastic about my orchids, but what with covid and other things, they have been neglected for too long and look tired. And some of them keep breaking apart and growing on in other pots or baskets, so I now have far too many of a couple of species: Cattleya intermedia and Coelogyne flaccida.

I'm in UK (London) - does anybody know if there is a good place to sell the ones I don't want to keep? I see there is a 'classifieds' list in this forum, but I don't seem to have access.

Welcome! Sorry I have never sold an orchid online. I’m just bumping your thread.

Welcome!

I think the classified section might be locked until you reach a certain number of posts (to prevent spamming), but I'll have to check this and get back to you.

If you are based in the UK as your flag suggests, I'm not sure this will be the best platform to sell your plants. Brexit makes it impossible for you to sell outside the British Isles, and while there are some UK users here, the numbers are quite low.

Have you tried social media? You can probably find Facebook groups for buying/selling orchids (perhaps via orchid society pages?). Best of luck!

I don't know if this is done at society meetings or shows in the UK. In the US, societies often provide a table at shows or at meetings where members can sell plants (usually the society gets a share of the proceeds)

Ebay is another way to sell, you can always list the plants as pickup only and just put your general area so bidders know if pickup is a feasible option for them.
Otherwise if you are willing to pack and post, you would open up the bidders to all of the UK. Ebay takes a fee for selling, cant remember what it is now.

Also there is Gumtree, that is UK wide with options to narrow down the location. However there is a tendancy for people to expect a real bargain on Gumtree.
Good luck with your sales.
