I assume what I was given is a phalaenopsis, but I'm so new to orchids that I don't really know what it is. It had a flower spike with pretty light purple flowers on it when I received it. It has a new flower spike starting now on it, and I seem to have successfully repotted it into bark type growing medium in a plastic pot with air holes.

I've been spraying it with an orchid fertilizer spray but stopped when I repotted it and brought it in for the winter, but in spite of running room humidifiers the house stays on the dry side, so I am dunking the pot in a tepid water bath for about 10 minutes every couple of days. I think the leaves and aerial roots and spike look healthy.

I am pretty savvy about lots of garden plants and herbs, but I know this is very different. Enjoying the adventure so far!

Welcome to the Orchid Board! Congratulations on the new spike!

You can glance through the Phalaenopsis - Hybrids forum here to see photos. Forums are accessible from the left yellow menu.

Fertilizer spray on orchid leaves won't be absorbed much. Use a fertilizer you apply to the roots. For a good read on growing Phals, click on Forums, then Beginners. Near the top is a sticky thread, The Phal. abuse stops here.

Thanks for the warm welcome! And for the tips for the site and about spray fertilizer! I'm glad I only bought a SMALL size bottle of that, then!

I'll be wandering around the forums for a bit, now, thanks, see you around!
