Question New to orchids

Hello everyone,

I am super new to orchids (maybe 6 months at it). I wanted to keep orchids alive that were given to me. They are doing well so other people have given me their orchids because they think they’ll be better off with me Anyways I was given these two orchids and I’m not sure what their names are, so I can search how to care for them.
They seem to be needing repotting and clean up.
If you know what they are called I would appreciate your help. That will help me prepare before doing anything.
Thank you!

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Both are likely hybrids in the Cattleya alliance. Most of these do well with typical Cattleya care.

Welcome to the Board! It sounds like you are off to a good start. Here is a link to a culture sheet for Cattleyas from the American Orchid Society. This website has a lot of basic information available to non-members. Cattleya Culture Sheet

Woah nice, and nice to see they are in containers that don't bind them in. The best thing I have found to date is to keep the roots sprayed during growing season but don't over water, Growing season is when they have little green tips on their white roots. Don't touch them too much. And-- root hormone added to any fertilization. I have destroyed many orchids, but when I started using rooting hormones, they started growing like crazy. And do not be afraid of more sun. Not "full" sun, but more sun.

About repotting. YOu do hear a lot of that here. But if they were in their trees at home (where they live) they would never really move much. Their dead roots would make the little nest that they would catch bird poo and other falling litter (leaves, dirt). One reason the plants I have growing are doing so well is I now wait about 3-4 years to repot. I repotted recently-- last fall-- but I hadn't touched them since 2016. There you go.
