Default Hello from Minnesota

Hi, my name is Susanne.

I am bad at choosing usernames, and I happened to have my saved tomato seeds in front of me when I registered.

I have lurked for a long time because I am engaged in a multi-year battle of wills with a cymbidium which grows like crabgrass but refuses to bloom, although I have pointed out to it many times that I am Following All the Instructions From the Orchid Web Sites. (Even the contradictory ones.)

I joined because I became a University of Minnesota Master Gardener this year and thought it was time to uncloak. We had a unit on houseplants, but not anything on orchids specifically, so I enjoy reading and learning all about the different growing setups and plants here. There are probably some Orchid People in my county, but there have not been any in person meetings this year, so as yet I have only met a few of the MGs who do the community vegetable gardens.

Welcome!

Standard Cyms will be a challenge where you live, since they need lots of light (including in in winter) and need fall days where it is cool at night but warm by day. There are an increasing number of "warmth tolerant" Cyms available that bloom early, don't need the fall cool-down, that are much easier to bloom in places where they have to move indoors by the time they are looking for that fall trigger.
