Hello from East Tennessee
Hello everyone!
I have 8 orchid plants:
One is a Brassavola, I think. This was my first orchid, a gift from my mom about 15 years ago.
Two of my orchids, which friends have given me within the past year or so, are Paphiopedilum.
Two are them are Phalaenopsis (grocery store variety).
I have no idea what the remaining three are. My dad developed an interest in orchids late in his life, after I had left home. He had orchids hanging from chains under the trees all over the back yard in Florida. After he passed away, I took little pieces from a bunch of them and brought them home with me to Tennessee in a couple of baggies. That was about 7 years ago. Only three have survived.
I’m pretty good at growing houseplants, I have flower gardens outside, I grow a variety of vegetables in above-ground boxes, and I grow strawberries and grapes. I don’t know anything about orchids. I give mine the same treatment as the house plants. I put most of them outside in the summer, keep them watered, and bring them back in the house in the fall.
I recently retired and have more time to learn how to care for my orchids. I’m especially worried about my Brassavola, and my search for a solution to its problems brought me to this forum. I also want to identify the names of the mystery orchids from my dad and learn how to best take care of them. I don’t even know if they’re in the correct potting medium. One of them has been struggling, and I’m afraid I’m going to lose it.
I look forward to learning from you!
