My main interest is in growing terrestial orchids and dealing with the many challenges that they offer. At present my focus is on the Spathoglottis, Calanthe and Phaius species and hybrids. In addition to these I also grow a number of different Spathoglottis and reed stem Epidendrums. My farm is at an altitude of 4500 ft. and so the cool climate tends to make it easier for them to be grown outdoors. Anyone else have this interest?

Hi, welcome to orchid board! I think it would be fun to have terrestrial orchid in my yard, but I live in Ohio and it gets too cold I think for the ones you have. I have seen some nice slipper orchids in northern Michigan, though.

Hi Tropic...welcome to Orchidboard

I have a number of terrestrials but since we do get an occasional very cold night in the winter, I don't have them in the ground, just in pots.

I have Phaius tankervilleae, Phaius Dan Rosenberg 'Tropical Ice' and three clones of Phaiocalanthe Kryptonite (Chariot of Fire, Ursula and Blood Bath)

We'd love to see pictures of what you're growing there, sounds lovely!

If you need help with anything, let us know

Thank you Lili99 and cb977 for your welcome to this Orchidboard and so look forward to many mutual benefits in growing orchids. Here our weather had a different effect on some of my outdoor growing orchids ... just too much rain during the rainy season. So, I do grow my plants in pots and transfer them to the outdoors from November to April which is our dry season. Then after this, I repot and clean them up for indoor greenhouse living where they are protected from the wet weather and many insect pests. In any case, this is also during their active growing season and the young tender shoots are better protected under cover and where they can be checked more regularly, watered and fertilized carefully.
