Default Hi from San Antonio

Well I started two posts already so this is a late introduction, but I plan on being here for a while so I feel I must introduce myself.

I've been a casual phalaenopsis grower for over 10 years. Then I got a discounted noid dendrobium two years ago which hasn't bloomed. It's probably because I gave it suboptimal conditions inside my house.

Three months ago, bored and in need of a new hobby, I ordered on Amazon one of those "get 5 random young live orchids" specials. That happened and then I ordered some more from a different seller. And then I ordered more and then I try not to order anymore...

Planting runs in my family. My parents keep an amazing garden of vegetables, fruits, flowers, and tropicals. My mother's side has avid potted plant growers, and my father's side has farmers. Supernatural green thumb is not hereditary in my experience, but my appreciation for plants has always been there.

I have a few blooming sized orchids but most of them are young. They are cattleyas, oncidiums, zygopetalums, cymbidiums, and dendrobiums. I'm attracted to having seedlings because for me the main joy of keeping orchids is the growing part.

Current challenge is finding a decent place outdoors for some of the high light orchids. That's about it. Thanks for reading my drivel.

Welcome! Can you grow outside all year, or does San Antonio get some frost?

Thank you!

In my parts we get at least one or two surprise freezes a year.

Welcome to the group, I also love watching seedlings grow. I ordered some recently also after losing all my orchids I had been growing for a while. Most of my old seedlings were from flashed that I bought. Now I just did like you did and ordered a variety of seedlings so I would have a few different kinds. Best of luck with them as they grow.

Hi thank you! Oh I love the idea of getting flasks. I will hold off on that until next year when I hopefully get a better set up for my orchids and have more experience with them. I'm so sorry that you lost your collection. I hope you get your collection back up soon.

Best of luck to you as well

Deflasking was a lot of fun and watching them little tiny seedlings begin to grow in your care is so rewarding. They would be blooming size or just about it right now. I did trade some and gave some away. I have a orchid case that my seedlings are in.

Make sure when you get a new shipment from where ever you order them from that you keep they all in different areas from each other just incase you bring in a sick orchid you don't want to lose them all like I did. I do this for at least 30 days. Then if they are all alive and looking well I can move them to where I want them with the rest of the collection.

I will definitely post when I get those flasks. It sounds so fun to work on haha. I guess I'll have to prepare an intro area. So far I've been keeping any new orchids on a shelf across the room from the orchid shelf.
