Hi! I am a newbie with orchids– but “bought” a collection of 7 orchids to help out somebody who was leaving the country.

Long story short – the orchids are not in great shape – many don’t have root systems, they are all dehydrated, and some have snail and slug damage. I don’t think there are active snails or slugs at the moment; I put some lettuce leaves out on the pot and nothing showed up.

I’d love to post some pictures and get your advice but I think I need to have five posts to do so? So here is my first post!

Do you know what kind of orchids they are? Phalaenopsis are common orchids in collections, sold at a lot of markets.

I believe they are all phalaenopsis. One was planted in a pot with no drainage because the previous owner (prior to my friend) thought it was a rubber tree plant. And it's probably the healthiest one of the lot!

There is a great thread here for learning to grow Phals. The basic idea is they need lots of air at the roots and lots of water. For best rescue success they should have warm temperatures and high humidity.

Thanks so much - I have read through part of the thread. So much very helpful information! That's why I decided to join the forum. I'm just wondering if some of the orchids I have are even salvageable at this point
