Default Hey there.

Hi, my name is Ian and I'm an orchidaholic.

About Ian: Seattle metro area resident. Late 20's. Married, 1 child (a 1 year old son). 1 dog, 3 cats, 1 python. Went to school to learn how to make beer (got two degrees in Food and Fermentation Science). Basically, I love all that is beer. This is why I love living in the Pacific Northwest: some of the best beer in the world is made here. I now work in the Quality Lab at a decent-sized regional brewery.

About Ian's Orchids: Mostly NOID or hybrids, for now. A couple/few phal-type Dends., an Odontocidium Wildcat, a Phal. Sogo Yukidian, Odontoglossum von Holm Bianca, and a few others. 8 or 9 altogether.

Have owned a few of these orchids for a couple years now, but never learned how to make them happy. The wife had them planted in potting soil, and as I watched them gradually decline in health I decided to find out how to really take care of them. Thats when the orchid bug bit me. I repotted them all, cutting back all the rotten roots. Now they are in recovery phase, and doing well with lots of new growth, but no new flowers other than 1 of the Dends. Once they become established I will expand the collection with much gusto.

I'm looking forward to tapping the wealth of information here on the Orchid Board (I have been on the AOS forum a bit, but there seems to be very little by way of "conversations": a more down to business atmosphere).

Thanks in advance.

Here is a random smiley for your enjoyment:

Hi Ian.
We here in Australia would call your job the ultimate dream Job, I suppose they even pay you for privilage of going work every day. As for the bug bitting, I'm glad to see we have another victim. Here's an idea you are in the unique postion to seeif orchids grow better with aid of Beer.I will look forward to results coming out of your lab.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone.

As for the career in beer, yes I do consider myself lucky, but I am still far from where I want to be. It's only the beginning.

I've posted some of my orchids in my picture gallery if you want to look. Not many blooming right now, but I do have some bloom shots.

Thanks again. I'll stop by in the chat room when I get the chance(s).

Welcome aboard, we have a few members from the Pacific NW, a few in B.C. and I'm also in the Seattle area. It's kind of interesting that our area has so many micro brews and coffee shops. I guess we like to imbibe, or at least create an art form with it.
You might check out the Northwest Orchid Society that meets in north Seattle on a monthly basis. They are a large society (200-300?) members.

Thanks Bill...I was just suggesting to Ian that he contact you to find out about any orchid societies that are in your area. I knew you'd come through!

Aboard Ian...orchids is what we call trial an error, at least on my part. Not a thing is born with directions so we try to do the best we can do and you have suceeded in that for sure. My mom has an orchid in potting soil, she is hard headed about me wanting to repot it appropriately, but when she see's what I have and how they have come along way she will come around, in due time...patience is of the essence with orchids. Hope to see you around the OB and ask away, no question is unanswered or silly by no means...glad your here/hear. As for the beer analogy with chids ...offer them the beer if they say "cold brewski with little foam on top" than share if they do not and you feel you need to give them a drink and see what will happen , let us know as we know what will happen if your human.

Welcome to the OB Ian! Beer Quality Lab....sounds good - does your job involve tasting that beer for quality or do you have to take work home with you?

Enjoy the forums!
