Hello from CT shoreline and it's freezing here!
I am an exhausted high school teacher and truly, orchids have saved me over the past 9 months of stressful Covid hybrid teaching. I've gone from having one lonely phal to a dining room full of dendrobiums, oncidiums, cattleyas, a tolumnia and a paph. Some may think I have a problem but every day, every new root nubbie, every opening bud, every hint of growth has given me JOY. I have so much to learn from you all and am looking forward to joining the discussions! I'm also looking forward to springtime, warmth, and flowers. And Spring Break.

Welcome to Orchidboard!
For a second there I thought you were someone I knew! I'm also originally from the CT shoreline, and know a teacher in my hometown also named Kim, but she teaches 5th grade.

Welcome to the OB, KiminCT!
I am new to orchids so cannot provide advice, however, I can tell you that these fine folks here at OB know their stuff and are so willing to help.
I am like you in that one little root nub makes me happy, a new leaf too; and Oh My-- a spike makes me do the happy dance. Orchids are JOY! Happy growing.

That is just how it starts...one or two orchids to brighten the day and then, finally, many more. I know my plants always make me feel happy. Great to have you here!

CT is the abbreviation for Connecticut, a state in the north-east US.

Yes, I'm in the USA, zone 6, on the shore of Long Island Sound. We get a lot of salty breezes (gusty wind, actually) and cool humidity. I need to decide whether to move my orchid babies outside during the summer.
