Smile Hello! From Cambs/Lincs in the UK.

Hello there!

From a very Autumny Lincolnshire / Cambridgeshire Border where I am in the UK. Thank you for letting me join, I shall enjoy reading many of your comments on the forums.

I'm a kind of newbie to Orchids although they have been around me for much of my life, let me explain that... Mum (90) and Dad (Deceased) have been big Greenhouse and garden lovers all their lives and started their love of Orchids way back in 1971 where they discovered a specialist Nursery in Newbury Berkshire where I was at Boarding school. I'm sure they only visited me AFTER having spent much of the visiting time, in the Nursery

The orchids they bought, and Mum STILL has, are Cymbidiums. marvellous! However, nowadays she is getting a little tired and clumsy bless her. Although we get along very well as Mother and Only son and we live next door but two houses away... I don't want to appear as if I'm taking over, we are at a delicate situation. As you know, plant life cannot be neglected for long and I have much to learn. The one thing that frustrates her is that she goes along with the old out of date books (are they?) and I go along with the Internet. But any way less of all this.... we still have good looking and somewhat healthy Cymbidiums! (and Mum of course! )

I've just bought my very first Orchid and I'm totally in love with it (My wife is worried!) It is a Cattleya Ports of Paradise, Emerald Isle... I call it Emmy

Any way.... that's me! the Orchid Kid. Looking forward to chatting with you!

Welcome to the board!

Why not ask your mother for some advice, as you’re just getting into the game? It’ll help the both of you!

Hi from across the pond. Someday I hope to visit your country if only to explore English gardens which I've heard so much about. The tv shows we get here from England usually have the most perfect gardens somewhere in the story. Tell mother hello as well!

Welcome to you and your Mum.
I took a peek at your new love interest...spectacular looking bloom and according to the write up can bloom twice a year and just as a bonus has a lemon fragrance!
Great choice!

Thank you for your welcomes! I've had a bit of a look around the forum and what a wealth of information here!

I am certainly not so dedicated as some of you are in this hobby. I have had many hobbies that I seem to have had in my years ranging from vintage British motorcycles and home beer brewing and with both of these activities I have been member of those forums with equally knowledgeable people in their subjects. My Mother for one, has always been a keen gardener (see picture of her garden earlier this year) pretty good for a 90 year old! and my wife is an absolute wizard with her sewing.

Orchid Kid ----- thumbs up for your first catt. A chartreuse flower-colour orchid is a very nice first addition.

Fantastic photo of that garden. I really love to see tulips and tulip flowers.

My part of the world can't naturally support tulips. If the climate here were right ----- then I would just love to grow those. Beautiful.

Your mum's garden is magnificent! English beer is dear to my heart.

You might like to try a beer called Kilkenny if its available in the USA. I've heard its popular in Canada.
Kilkenny is an Irish beer, same makers as Guinness.
Smooth and creamy, lighter than Guinness. A 'good drop' Im reliably told.
