Greetings from Southeast Texas!
Default Greetings from Southeast Texas!

Hi everyone, I am a newbie from the gulf coast of Texas. I am growing two different varieties of Vanilla, two planifolia plants and two pompona plants. My planifolias are small, but doing wonderfully in my hot humid climate. Since I was relatively ignorant about these plants they are planted in a soil/perlite mixture. My pomponas are a different story. One is growing like crazy. I was instructed to plant it 60/40 soil/perlite so I did. It has grown over its trellis and grown two inches in two weeks! The other was probably over watered and has lost its roots. We took it out of its soil mixture and repotted in an orchid bark mixture. Probably should have used moss. I hate to move it again so soon. It is alive and growing but the bottom leaves are yellow and one is getting a bit wrinkly. We mist it a few times per day and make sure the bark is moist. But I don't want to get it too much water again. I just don't want to lose this plant! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

They are giant vines. They would love your muggy outdoor weather right now, but don't move them suddenly into the sun. You can root them in a deep glass of water. Change the water daily. When they begin making more roots, pot them into something loose, like bark and perlite. Keep moist.
