Hello all,

I am Jeanine and I live right outside of the city. I have always had an affinity for growing things but have never tried to grow orchids. They always seemed so intimidating to keep alive. Until I fell in love with them and the amazing array of colors they show! I have gone from no orchids to 16 this summer. I even bought them their own little greenhouse! Which I enjoy the beautifully perfumed air wafting from it every morning.

All (except one) are NOIDs, purchased from Trader Joe's. I have two nearby stores that I have been able to find something other than Phalaenopsis in. So I regularly check the stores to search out the orchids with the "EXOTIC" tag on it. Then I hunt down what kind of orchid it may be and how to take care of it on the internet. So far I am reasonably certain that I have some Oncidiums, Miltonias, Miltoniopsis and of course the ubiquitous Phalaenopsis. I can not wait until I have enough posts on the board to be able to post some pics and expand my "guess what orchid this is game" beyond me!

Also the board will enable me to learn more about the care of my orchids. So far the internet and my instincts honed growing other plants have been what I have been going by. Sticking your finger in the pot to see if a plant needs watering works with orchids too!

Nice to find this board, looking forward to you all helping me save some plants this year!!! Hope I can help someone along the way, too!

Lol, if you know what you are talking about (and I think that you do) that helps keep it going, too!

Colorstruck!

What a nice intro to why you're "doing" orchids now. Can't wait to see some pictures, and see what you've been up to. I got started with orchids in a similar way... what the heck, they're pretty, and I should be able to do this!

And you're very correct. There are folks here who've been doing this for a long, long time. All the knowledgeable input from folks keeps us rocking right along.

Thank you for the lovely and encouraging welcome. I can not wait to share some pics and plans with folks who really know orchids and get some input. I am reading up on how to post pics now.

Exactly what I am thinking!!! The nerd in me loves research and learning new things. The gardener in me does not mind applying different approaches, and loves observing plants to see what works. Next year I am either going to have some beautiful and healthy plants or dead sticks - but it will not be for lack of trying!

Welcome to OB ColorStruck. I am relatively new to orchids as well (3 years) and now have 60 -- yikes, how did this happen? The OB is wonderful! So much expert advice.
