Vanilla plantifolia yellow leaves
Default Vanilla plantifolia yellow leaves

Hello

My name is Vusi from Johannesburg South Africa. I’m so happy to be part of this forum.
I have been growing a vanilla plantifolia from a cutting and it did root and had a new vine growing to almost a meter in length. I have kept it indoors where it can get outside sunlight. My troubles then started when winter settled in and the cutting leaf started turning yellow to brown. I reported it and cut off the new vine from the mother plant. It seems like everything just went from bad to worse. New growth on top of the vine fell off followed by young leaves turning yellow to brown. The stem looks healthy but the leaves have gone from dark green to a light green with a yellow tint. What can I do? Please help.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Vanilla is a warm-growing plant that likes high humidity. It usually drops old leaves. I wouldn't repot in winter, but it should survive until next spring. I would not expect it to grow now. Let it dry between waterings in winter.

Hi Estación

I thought I should give an update about my Vanilla plant. Since we last spoke I bad stopped watering it and tried to find it a new home and covered it with a frost cover since it’s been very cold in Johannesburg. Most of the leaves have dried up and the ones left look like they will also be turning yellow. Is it normal. Do you think it will be best to start watering when the weather gets warm?

If it's been that cold it might not live. Is there a way you could bring it indoors to a warmer area?

Hi Estación

I hope this note finds you well. It’s been a while since we last spoke and hope you’re keeping safe. I thought I should give you an update on my Vanilla. Summer came and it started to show life. But what is puzzling is that it’s looking gree, health and leaves a little bit whitered. The only thing it didn’t grow a centimeter it just stopped growing. Could this be a norm? Or there’s more to it? growing

They like warm, humid weather and a lot of water. What is the relative humidity there? How is it potted? How are you watering?

I water and least once a week and our humidity does go to about 78%. I also feed it with orchid fertilizer. I have attached pictures for easy reference
