Now part of me was going to ask if there was a cure but do you know what... I dont want one

I now have 13 flowering plants 4 flowering size just not in bloom 40 seedlings and 5 small plants on their way.

My only issue is its still so cold here they are all in the house just cant wait for the temps to rise so i can move them out to the greenhouse.

Just thought of another issue if I keep buying and growing at this rate could be a bit crowded in here come next winter

Kat

Susanne B-
I noticed in another post you mentioned the use of Listerine as a agent to clean of fungus/pests......where else is it safe to use it and under what circumstances.....I hate using hardcore chemicals. I have bought Listerine and Organocide.....I'm just worried I'm using them wrong.

Ack!
(we got another three. we have OAD BAD, but a LOVELY setup!!! )

fellow newbie.
I have a money saving tip for you.
Instead of buying a bunch of new orchids keep your eyes peeled for orchids belonging to people you know that don't look too healthy (the orchids I mean although my clever plan might work even better if the people aren't healthy ). You then offer to "rescue" their orchid for them with a promise to return the orchid when it is back to good health. Next, you take the orchid home with you and cut away the "sickly portions (this works best with older sympodial plants such as oncidiums and dendrobiums) and pot that for yourself. Now, if all goes well, after several months, your friend's orchid will end up with a better looking plant that will have new growth at both ends and you will have a new orchid for your troubles.
This is a tried and true method for orchid procurement. I know, because I am currently "nursing" approximately 15 orchids for my brother in law. Any of the ones I like will be joining my personal collection once they are healthy enough for division.
Hope this helps.
AaronM

P.S. That monstrous Onc. sphacelatum (why yes, that is a 1gal watering can sitting in front of the orchid) will be "trimmed back" after it flowers and the "trimmings" will be come part of my collection.

Al- the little mermaid janet is doing fine in a basket...we water her almost daily, as the mix is very fast drying....does this sound about right?

Until she blooms, what fertilizer mis is best....right now we are using the standard orchid mix with 20 percent nitrogen.

Welcome! Sounds like you're off to a great start! I have a good feeling that you're are going to be just fine (especially since you found the OB).

Watering the BC every other day sounds good, as long as the mix is pretty dry when you go to water. While it's actively growing, water away. Just be sure to cut back a bit in fall-winter.

As for fertilizer, it's a mixed bag. If it's formulated for orchids, the nitrogen shouldn't be in the form of urea (check the label). Some will have some urea, but if the 20% N is mostly urea, look for something else. Check out First Ray's website. He's a OB member and the site has lots of great info on this topic (not to mention some good supplies.)

And one last bit of advice. I know how exciting and fun it can be to "care" for your orchids, but don't nurture them to death. Most of my plants are happier when I just leave them alone, and some did better when I missed a watering here and there. Find a routine, and stick to that schedule. Then when they do well (or bad) you know that the care has been consistent, and you can change it or keep doing it. If you water erratically, and fertilize erratically, and move them from spot to spot, then you don't know what to change. Get it? Be patient and deliberate and you will reap great rewards!

Good Growing,

Thanks Royal!! - thats what we're trying to do - just get them on a sumer schedule, see what happens and if they do great, then hey! we can keep that up. we have enough now that we just don't have the time to love them to death anymore.......but our nodosa "little stars" hybrd is about to bloom again, so our TLC wasn't for naught....

On that note....for epi species and mounts - if you're misting/watering daily or every other day - do you still fertilize weakly, weekly, or would you do it every fourth day?
