You're in the winter rainfall region? You should talk to a gentleman named Les Nesbitt who has a nursery. He works with terrestrial orchids that people in most of the world consider Holy Grail plants that are native to, and naturally adapted to your climate. The genera Thelymitra, Diuris, and Caladenia spring to mind

Just because I'm a moderator doesn't necessarily mean I know what I'm doing.
And no worries... just buy a bigger hat.

Hats off to you for learning Japanese!
I can understand your reluctance to go to club meetings if they stress you out, not the ideal situation.
Keep an eye out on the club website though as they usually give the dates of display/shows where locally grown plants are available. Some are held very locally to you, the Colonnades shopping centre around end of July and the Seaford shopping centre end of September. Victor holds one at the end of August in the Woolies shopping centre and there is a big show at the Parade Grounds, North Terrace, Adelaide where interstate sellers and suppliers attend. There is also the Royal show too.
Webpage is South Coast Orchid Club of South Australia Inc. where you can access some growing information.

Thanks so much - nicer in real life... even hubby liked it, and his plant appreciation is limited to the following -
a. Green with sharp bits
b. Green with soft bits
c. Green with flowers
d. Green that should be chopped down
e. Green that wife will slay me for touching or looking sideways at
f. Green
g. Dead

I've seen a lot of the showings over time - there was most recently a display at Seaford, however I didn't stop for long. The other reason for not joining a club is that I don't really want to be into it that deeply, lol.
I don't intend to grow the collection by much (HaH!), just understand what I have. I'll try for some babies from the phalaenopsis flower spikes when they're done.
I'm really not a real orchid fancier, as such. Apparently there is an orchid retailer on Commercial Road - I might stop by there. If he has any tiny growers I may get a couple for the terrarium. Building a waterfall for that... trying to keep the vanilla warm and humid.
My curiosity killed this particular cat, and the Vanilla started it.
I have cymbidiums, but as you know they're pretty common, minimal care, set and forget... anything else has to be grown inside as I have full sun coastal exposure - not ideal! Micro-climates aren't really possible right now. I have the cyms with some bromeliads and shade fanciers like hydrangea, in a shade house type of affair, however all those things will take extremely dry air, which the other orchids I like will NOT, lol.

Thanks Subrosa!
I'll try and digest that info. I'm not really trying for a collection right now, however I'll definitely keep it in mind - in case of accidental or incidental addiction!
*UPDATE* Just had a quick look for Nesbitt's, and all I could find was the address and a request to send an SSAE to receive a list. Much as I'm a Luddite, I'm also a Technophile, and that's a bit old school for me. I want at least a catalogue I can view online before ordering lists and so-on.
I'm just not 'die-hard' enough!

Have you done any research into the members of the genera I mentioned? If not, a look at a Thelymitra variegata might change your mind about that!

Yes, Noarlunga Orchids, I will be interested to hear if they still have orchids, last time I checked out the website it was full of adverts for letterboxes.

Yes, I did look, thanks. The flower is spectacular, and the leaves are nice corkscrews, however it's not really something I'd bother with as I have enough to look after already, lol.
At this point I wanted something I could shove on a mount, and/or stick in a terrarium and deal with easily - so that meant epiphytes. I just love the roots wrapped around the wood, more than anything.
Terrestrials would probably do OK in the shade house, especially as it's a native to here, but I'm afraid they might get stomped when pruning the Fatsia & Co - I'm running out of space out there, and other things like cymbidiums and bromeliads, I'm not frightened of hubby stomping on them. There's always a bazillion more.
I could pot them, but then it's more pots to fuss over and... I would have done it in my youth, but I'm just too jaded now, to want to go acquiring everything I see.
But thank you!

His card still says, roses, orchids and letter boxes, so we'll see! A neighbour put me onto them, when she bought some standard roses.
I'm just being nosy really - unless he has some micro orchids I can put in the terrarium, I shall simply admire and pass by...
