I have been looking for an orchid to grow at my desk when I found these. I find their flowers and foliage growth just beautiful. So I found some and at first bought 2... which grew to more.
I keep them in a 12x12x12 Exo Terra tank with an elevated egg crate bottom in 3.5" pots. I tried to mound them with long strands of sphagnum moss the best I can, with a hollow center. (The two mounted ones will be transferred to new pots soon like the others.) There is a small fan in the corner that is always on. I water/mist in the morning. I don't have a glass/acrylic top yet so I do cover it at night when the light is off. When the light is on, I cover the parts where it won't interfere with the light. The picture I included makes the tank look more purple than it actually is. (My phone camera for some reason captures my plant light this way.)
I know they most likely won't bloom this year or the next. I enjoy looking at their leaves as much as I look forward to future flowers. If I get too impatient, then next year (if these survive me) I will buy a more mature plant.
Future plans:
- Better plant light inside a hood.
- Top covered with glass or acrylic. Probably the later so I can attach a fan to move air out of the tank when needed. (Current fan inside just circulates air inside tank.)
- Zoomed ReptiFogger for use in morning humidity.
- Use of automation. Lights on timer. Exhaust fan on humidity control. Humidifier on timer.
- Background picture so I can better view my plants.
I look forward to learning more about the different ways to care for orchids and seeing pictures of setups and plants.
I've never done that setup, so no suggestions waving here. But many here have and I'm sure you'll get lots of help and suggestions. If you haven't looked at the Terrarium Gardening thread yet, you should. Lots of great setups.
