It's my Mom's fault

Hi, I'm -the redhead- from Boulder, CO

It's all my Mom's fault I'm now learning about orchids She has been an orchid fancier for years, and is now sharing her knowledge and experience with me.

Right now I only own 4 plants. The catt at home is my experiment plant which I've had for a few months now. I'm pleased that the orchid gurus pronounced it to be a healthy plant yesterday, tho I should add an extra day or so between waterings.

Yesterday I had the good fortune to attend a beginner's orchid class put on by the nice folks at Fantasy Orchids, who were very gracious about answering my many questions. As a result of orchid fumes, I left with 2 milts (one pink, one deep red) and a white phael. These new ones all live at work, as they should (hopefully) do well in the north facing windows of my office. They are all just in bud and I'm looking forward to the flowers in a couple weeks.

Once the weather gets better, my Mom is giving me a trove of 25 or so catts. I have a spreadsheet of the plants, many of which seem to be big plants. So I have a couple months to get with the program.

I'm looking forward to learning a great deal here.

I wish MY mom was that cool! Both my parent keep trying to convince me to stop getting new plants, orchids or otherwise. I think my mom might be weakening though.

Maybe if I had my own house to fill up with orchids they wouldn't mind so much.

I'm really enjoying having something 'new' to talk to Mom about. I've sent her various small orchids over they years, and have always enjoyed listening to her talk about them. She's pretty active in her area, and has won some ribbons over the years. I believe she has ~80-90 plants, including the ones she's been saving for me.

One of the most interesting aspects of all this is translating between her climate/environment (Lancaster, PA) and mine.

I think I'm getting the fast-track intro to the fancy. Now I just have to figure out how many plant stands and lights I'm going to need for this bounty.

Well, I'm glad that you have become interested in orchids. Personally my mom has a black thumb and kills pretty much every plant she touches. It's good to have someone close to you that has knowledge and experience with these wonderful plants. Welcome to the crazy and wonderful world of orchid growing!

It's so nice to have family members that like orchids, and even better, give you orchids! You should find all the info you need here to know how to care for all of them. Watch out though, there are some really good enablers here, and you'll end up buying lots more orchids!

My mom is exactly the same! She kills almost everything, which is really worrying me as I will have to leave my entire orchid collection in her care next year, since I am going to the USA for a 6 month internship....

Here's the list of orchids I have here at work:

1 white phal sago 'Yukidian' w/ 2 spikes, just starting to bloom

1 pink milt (vexillaria x Lady Veitch) w/2 spikes, just starting to bloom

1 red milt Arnold Linsman 'Hot & Spicy' w/2 spikes, will bloom next week (?)

As well as some paperwhites and a couple of unidentified plants I rescued from Home Depot.

I'll work on posting the list from my Mom later.

Is it the end of the world that a small tear (~1", 2.5 cm) happened at the tip of one of my phal leaves? The leaf is 7" (18 cm) long & 4" (10 cm) inches wide.

Hi Red! Kudos to your Mom! She sounds like a very giving person. How sweet of her to share her passion with you

I started gardening and keeping houseplants because my Mom was an avid gardener and would rather get rid of furniture than a house plant. The orchids I found on my own, and she thinks it's great. Maybe I'll get to share a few with her in time.
