Thanks! I had not considered that the little one could be encyclia, too. I'll need to check to make sure that its growing conditions are appropriate.
My friend has no idea what the flowers looked like. They were left in her yard when she bought the house, and I rescued them about a year later when she decided to rip out all of her lovely tropicals and replace it with......turf.
All of the rescues were 100% neglected for at least 12 months, but they seem to be doing well. I may lose the dendrobiums I tried to transplant from a palm tree, but I tried.
I actually love the big one in the birdcage, and it seems to be doing well, so I think I'll leave it. I would lose a lot of older roots if I tried to remove it from the wood they are growing on.
The only thing I'm nervous about is that the leaves seem to be getting a little streaky. It was suggested that it might just need fertilizer. Since it has no media, I'm not sure how to make sure it's getting the fertilizer it needs....
