Thank everyone for your kind words but I am sad to say that I was too late. The last portion of the orchid turned all brown. So I was not able to save this plant. BUT I have learned so much that I will get a new Orchid and make it my passion to learn and help them grow! Yes I am sad but I look forward to the future! Thank you everyone and once I get my new Orchid I will post pictures and of course more questions!

There is a lot of good information here on growing them. People are successful with several different growing techniques. Look through the Beginners, Advanced and Cattleya forums to learn more, and see what kinds of plants/flowers exist.

Most people run into trouble with Cattleyas with just a few things: using medium too fine, so there isn't enough air at the roots; underwatering; not giving enough light to flower. Start with a known vigorous hybrid and go from there. As for size, you can find small Cattleya hybrids that flower in 3" / 7.5cm pots, all the way up to huge ones needing at least a 10" / 25cm pot.to grow well.

I'm sorry to hear that, Tazenman. I know that particular plant had great sentimental significance to you. It happens sometimes, though, and I'm glad to hear you are considering this all a learning experience and are willing to try again with another orchid -- or two or three, lol. Try to take a real objective look at the conditions you can provide, i.e., light, temperature, humidity, watering frequency, etc., and choose orchids that are known to do well in those conditions.

As you have already found out, this board is a great place to learn and ask questions. And, yes, we love pictures! Best of luck to you in your orchid growing.

Oh, I'm sorry the plant didn't make it! But I hope you enjoy picking out a new one. There are so many to choose from, and you can get one that is well suited to the conditions you can provide for it (light, temperature, humidity).
