Is this a bamboo orchid (arundina)?
Default Is this a bamboo orchid (arundina)?

I found this plant abandoned at the end of the winter season in our town greenhouse a couple of years ago. I repotted it and it grows very well. Like a weed really.

It has never flowered so I've not been able to confirm its identity.

The plant is tall with the canes from 3 to 4 ft tall. The sharp leaves grow in pairs up the stalk as you can see. I grow it in full sun (I'm in northern New Jersey) and feed it weakly weekly.

I am very interested to know if it is an arundina and if so if anyone has suggestions on prompting it to bloom.

Thanks so much - /chet

Arundina are tropical, so I think not.

The canes remind me of dendrobium but I dont think so.

Probably another kind of plant.

It reminds me of Horsetail but, it's not quite right...or a mini Arundo. I'm relatively sure it's not an orchid.

I've never grown them because they're too tall for my conditions so its not a genus I'm real familiar with, but I was thinking reed stemmed Epidendrum?

Dendrobium, maybe?

If you can ever get it to bloom, then you'll have a chance of knowing.

The emerging canes are wrong.

Default Thanks for the ideas

Thank you all for your suggestions. The reed stemmed Epidendrum is a beauty but the leaves look fleshier and more widely spaced than this one. Arundos look more like its growth habit but it has keikis and I'll need to read more to see if the arundos do that. I'm pretty sure it isn't a dendrobium. I have a number of those and it isn't like any.

Fingers crossed, I'll see some flowers this year.

Thanks again,

/chet

There is an app called "Like that Garden," you might plug it in there and see if it recognizes it.

Chet, I have no idea if it is a dendrobium, but don't be so quick to claim that it isn't because it looks different than what you're familiar with.

For example, look for a photo of dendrobium anceps – certainly not the same as your photo, but probably a lot different from the dendrobiums you're thinking of.

The only reason I question the arundina is because of the size. They can be 6 to 8 feet tall.

It's hard to tell from these photos since they aren't good enough quality to really see important details and you didn't really provide much in the way of measurements, but I don't believe this is Arundina graminifolia based on the canes and foliage. At least, I wouldn't bet my life on that ID.

Obviously, photos of the flowers would clear things up immediately, and higher resolution photos and better focus of the foliage, canes, roots, etc might help. However, the leaves look much too wide and substantial to be A. graminifolia (i.e. grassy foliage). While it's hard to gauge the size of things, the canes strike me as being thicker than I'd expect from Arundia and the ridges/nodes on the leafless canes are much more pronounced than I'd expect. To me it has more of an Epidendrum (or close relative) appearance, but I could also see it perhaps being a Dendrobium, or something along those lines.

I will say that Arundia can and does produce keikis in my experience, it's just that I'm far from convinced this actually is Arundia.
