Thanks Sarajean. Dendrobium smillieae is the closest match I've seen so far and the descriptions and photos I looked up - as well as yours - look very much like this plant.
The leaves are a uniform color, not variegated. That was likely just light on the leaves.
I also looked up ginger. But it doesn't have anything like a ginger bulb. The base of plant is much like my Dendrobium Nobiles - a small, round bulb from which the slender green roots extend down into the medium.
From some of the cultural pages I've read, it may be that I'll be better off moving out of direct sunlight and into bright shade and switching, now that fall has come, to a nitrogen-free, high-phosphorus fertilizer.
That's the plan anyway. Now that I have a culture sheet I can follow, maybe we'll see some blossoms.
