Is this an orchid? If so, what kind?
Default Is this an orchid? If so, what kind?

I was given this plant as a gift, and at first I thought it was an ugly boring plant (it didn't have any flowers). I've had it for a little over a month and I've treated it like all the other outdoor plants I have. Just yesterday it bloomed with one of the prettiest flowers I've ever seen. Is this an orchid? If so, what kind is it? If not, does anyone know what kind of plant it is?

Check if the leaves are coming out of a bulb like structure, If they are, then it is probably an orchid.

Looks like Tigridia pavonia - a member of the Iris family.

Orchids have a specific pollination structure within the flower (this can be looked up online), which is what makes them orchids. It is not the pseudobulbs or the rhizomes etc.
