I'm sure they'd have lots of great plants I've never seen before. (And hopefully that my mom hasn't seen before.)
Where in California do you live? There are many shows and grower open houses, and fall show season is coming up - especially in October, some areas have something going on nearly every weekend.

I missed the California part. I keep thinking everyone lives in a place like Ohio....

You can also buy orchids online. Here are two that have some nice orchids and are both on Amazon (Shipping for one or two orchids is often cheaper through Amazon.):
Thanks for the links! I appreciate it. These orchids are gorgeous.

There are all sorts of orchid shows, orchid vendors and orchid societies in southern California! I'm sure Roberta can help you find them. I know there is a Newport Harbor Orchid Society. Most orchid people are very happy to talk to newcomers and help them into the world of orchids.

The American Orchid Society has a listing of affiliated societies:

Hi, neighbor... check out Orange County International Orchid Show & Sale Events calendar. And not yet listed there, Andy's Orchids in Encinitas is having open house Oct 7-8-9, in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Orchid Estate and Cal Orchid are having open houses Nov 4-5, and several San Diego area nurseries will have open houses the first weekend in December. So LOTS of opportunities to see a huge variety of orchids. Shows have lots of "how to grow orchids" seminars, as well - so a chance to learn how to take care of them.
