Sogo Vivien, Vanda Tang See Hang...?
Default Sogo Vivien, Vanda Tang See Hang...?

Hello all!

I am a n00b and would like to seek guidance in identifying my butterfly orchids.

The purple one I think is Sogo Vivien, but I could be mistaken. The second one -- two pictures of it -- might be Vanda Tang See Hang, but I am very uncertain about that. The third is totally unknown to me. Hopefully someone can help me identify these beauties.

The striped one somewhat resembles Sogo Vivien, but so do many others. But Phal Sogo Vivien is a compact plant with smaller flowers that show influence from Phal equestris ancestry. This appears to be a more typical standard Phal, so I think Sogo Vivien is unlikely.

Vanda (Papilionanda) Tang See Hang is a semi-terete Vanda, meaning the leaves would be quite narrow and the plant would be tall. Yours appears to be a fairly typical standard Phal. There are some less common hybrids that combine Phalaenopsis and Vanda, but I don't see any obvious Vanda influence in these flowers.

All three seem to be typical standard Phal hybrids of very common appearance. Hundreds of named and un-named hybrids of similar appearance are virtually indistinguishable. Without additional information from a supplier or a tag it will not be possible to give them a name, even if you happen to see a picture that looks just like it.

PaphMadMan, thanks for your reply.

What are some possible downsides with not knowing the exact species? Other than satisfying my curiosity, I am a little worried about not being able to provide a given Phal the best possible care.

I also believe Sogo Vivian is a variegated leaf. At least mine is.

Welcome to the Orchid Board! Both of those are very beautiful flowers. I wouldn't be able to choose just one Phalaenopsis.

You are right - you need to know the type of orchid to find out how to care for it. Yours appear to by hybrid Phalaenopsis. Care for most of the hybrids with round, white-to-pink-to-yellow and spotted flowers is the same.

They prefer bright shade with no direct sun, but you might need extra light in a Finnish winter.

They prefer not to have temperatures much below 15-20C, and even that is low for them. They are happier from 25-35C but will grow at lower temperatures.

They prefer to be watered well, then allowed to go dry. But they shouldn't stay dry too long.

Regular, very small amounts of fertilizer help them grow and bloom better. However, fertilizer is the least important thing for them.

Here is a good thread on Orchid Board dealing with Phalaenopsis:
The Phal abuse ends here.

There is another group of Phalaenopsis with more star-shaped flowers. They generally have fewer flowers at a time, with flowers much shinier and waxier than the big round ones, often with substantial fragrance, on flower stems that continue producing flowers over many months to years. The leaves are much paler green and more shiny. They are not commonly sold in markets so you are not as likely to see them. This group of Phalaenopsis species and hybrids should stay warmer than 18C and does better with higher humidity.

By the way, what is the shrub with red flowers outside the window?

These are all standard complex hybrid Phals. The general instructions for Phalaenopsis care are based on exactly this type. One big advantage of the commonly sold hybrids is their ease of care. After several generations of selective breeding any quirks of the particular species involved are swamped out, and most plants are easily grown under general conditions.

As you advance in your orchid growing, if you choose to branch out into species or specialty types it may be important to know exactly what you have to provide the proper care. With these you can be certain that nothing special is required.

The most commonly seen variegated Phals sold with a name attached are specific clones of Sogo Vivien (with an e), but in general Sogo Vivien is not always variegated. That is a characteristic of certain clones, not the whole cross.

Thanks for your replies, all.

OK, I will do my best to keep these orchids happy. I have only just begun my journey with orchids, so it will be a learning experience.

Mountain ash is the more frequently use common name in the US, and those are fruit clusters. Flowers would be white. Part of the apple tribe.
